Is It Ego or Spirituality? 7 Subtle Signs You’re Stuck in Spiritual Ego.

Have you ever thought…Why, even after meditating, chanting, praying or reading spiritual books—you still feel triggered, anxious, restless, or disconnected?

Sometimes, it’s not because we’re not spiritual enough…It’s because the ego has started wearing a spiritual mask in spite of our awareness.

Yes, even on the most sacred paths, ego can sneak in silently. And if we’re not aware, it can mislead us—making us believe we’re growing when we’re actually stuck or disconnected from our higher self.

Here are 7 gentle but powerful signs that ego might be leading your spiritual journey

1. You Feel Spiritually Superior - You know that subtle inner voice in your head that whispers, "They're not awakened yet... but I am"? Yeah, that's not your soul talking—that's ego wearing a spiritual costume. I've been there, feeling like I had some secret knowledge others just didn't get yet. But here's what I learned: true spirituality makes you more humble, kind, compassionate to others and not more judgmental. When you're genuinely connected to your soul, you see the divine in everyone's journey. You do not compare. You feel calm and peaceful inside and focus on your vibes only.

2. You Seek Validation for Your Practices - Ever notice how it looks when someone doesn't appreciate your newfound calm or spiritual lifestyle? That disappointment? That's your ego talking. Your soul doesn't need applause or recognition for how calm or peaceful you are. I remember feeling hurt when my family didn't seem impressed by my meditation practice. That's when I realized: when you catch yourself feeling hurt by others' lack of recognition, gently ask yourself, "Am I doing this for me, or for them?" Yeah.. that's ego that needs validation from others. Spirituality is in inward journey. A journey of me with my inner God so I should be focusing on my inner light and peace.

3. You Judge Others' Paths - "She doesn't meditate." "He still eats meat." "They're so unconscious." Ouch.. How could they be like this. We've all had these thoughts, right? But here's the thing: everyone's walking their own path at their own pace. I used to mentally critique people's spiritual choices until I realized I was creating hierarchy where none exists. When you find yourself comparing spiritual practices like they're report cards, that's ego trying to play teacher. So, when you start to judge others, criticise or think you are superior than others while on spiritual journey, its your ego not your true self.

4. You Identify Too Much With Your Spiritual Role - Healer, lightworker, empath, intuitive—these can be beautiful gifts. But if they become your entire identity and you feel lost without them, pause. I remember when I first discovered I was an empath and suddenly everything was about being an empath. It felt good to have a label, a reason for my sensitivity. But when someone challenged that identity, I felt completely shaken. That's when I realized: I'm not my spiritual gifts. I'm the soul expressing through them. Live your life authentically with peace and calmness.

5. You're Impatient With Your Growth - Frustrated with your "progress"? Expecting faster results in your healing? The ego loves timelines and milestones. I used to get so annoyed when my meditation didn't instantly fix my anxiety or when my chakras weren't "balanced" after a few sessions. But your soul operates on divine timing, not your schedule. Growth isn't linear. Healing isn't a race. When you catch yourself thinking, "I should be further along by now," take a breath. You're exactly where you need to be. Focus on your heart because your soul knows the way not your monkey mind because its ego who chatters and makes you anxious.

6. You Avoid Negative Emotions in the Name of 'High Vibes' - "Positive vibes only!" sounds nice, but suppressing anger, grief, or fear isn't healing—it's spiritual bypassing. Your soul wants to feel everything. It knows that emotions are messengers, not enemies. I used to push away sadness because I thought it wasn't "spiritual enough." But when you push away the "negative" stuff to maintain your spiritual image, you're actually disconnecting from your authentic self. Your body is a temple. Keep it calm and peaceful. Do not supress your emotions because suppress emotions only creates blocks for the divine flow and it is the ego who wants to win in the name of high vibes instead of feeling all emotions.

7. You Get Defensive When Corrected - Someone questions your belief and you instantly feel offended? That defensive reaction is ego protecting its throne. A soul that's truly at peace can hear feedback without feeling attacked. It doesn't need to be right all the time. When someone challenges your perspective, can you stay curious instead of defensive? So, listen with patience.
