Why Mind Creates Illusion: The Trap Between Reality & Perception (A Spiritual Perspective)

Have you ever had one of those moments where you're lying in bed at 3 AM, staring at the ceiling, and suddenly everything you thought you knew about your life feels... questionable? Like maybe the story you've been telling yourself isn't actually true or you are stuck in the loop of countless fears, worries and your heart starts to beat fast?

You start thinking: "Is this really my life?" Maybe you question whether that person actually meant what they said, or if you're just projecting your own fears onto their words. Perhaps you wonder if you're truly happy or just going through the motions because that's what you think you're supposed to do.

If you've been there, you're definitely not alone. I've had countless conversations with people who've experienced this unsettling realization that their mind might be playing tricks on them. And here's what I've learned: your mind is an incredible tool—it can solve problems, create beautiful art, and help you navigate daily life. But it can also be a master illusionist, creating elaborate stories that feel completely real but are actually just... stories.

Yes..only stories.. no reality at all.

Why Your Mind Creates These Illusions?

Let me tell you something that might surprise you: your mind was never designed to be your spiritual guide. That's not its job. Your mind was built for one primary purpose—to keep you alive. It's constantly scanning for threats, fears, making calculations, comparing situations to past experiences, and trying to predict what's coming next.

Think about it like this: if your mind were a person, it would be that friend who's always worried about everything but for you only. The one who sees danger everywhere and has a backup plan for their backup plan. Helpful in a crisis, but not exactly the person you'd want making decisions about your life's deeper meaning.

But here's where it gets tricky. On your spiritual journey, this survival-focused mind can actually become a trap. It starts creating illusions that feel so real, so convincing, that you mistake them for truth. Let me show you how this happens.

The 4 Ways Your Mind Creates Spiritual Illusions

1. The Ego Creates a False Identity and We Caught into it.

You know that voice in your head that's constantly commenting on everything? The one that says things like, "I'm the person who always has it together," or "I'm not as smart as everyone else," or "I'm the successful one in my family"? That's your ego talking, and it's basically your mind's attempt to create a solid identity in a world that's constantly changing.

Here's the thing about the ego- it's not evil or wrong. It's just... limited. It's like trying to understand the ocean by looking at a single drop of water. The ego insists that you are your job, your relationships, your achievements, your failures. It creates endless comparisons: "I'm better than them at this, but they're better than me at that."

I remember working with a client named Michael who was a successful lawyer. His ego had convinced him that he WAS his career. When he started questioning whether law was really his passion, he felt like he was having an identity crisis. "If I'm not a lawyer, then who am I?" he asked me. That's the ego's trap, it makes you believe that these temporary roles and labels are your true self.

But here's what the ego doesn't want you to know: your soul is eternal, real, authentic and doesn't need any of these labels to exist. The ego fears this truth because it would mean its death. So it keeps creating stories, drama, and a false sense of "me" that constantly needs validation from the outside world.

2. Past Wounds Become Present-Day Filters

This one hits deep. That time your best friend betrayed your trust in high school. The way your parents criticized you as a child. The heartbreak that left you questioning whether love was real. These experiences don't just live in your memory, they become the lens through which you see everything and everyone.

Your mind, in its attempt to protect you, creates rules based on past pain: "Don't trust too easily—remember what happened last time." "Don't get your hopes up—you'll just be disappointed." "Don't speak up—you'll be rejected."

I had a client, who hadn't dated in three years because her mind had convinced her that "all men leave eventually." This wasn't based on reality—it was based on one particularly painful breakup that her mind had turned into a universal truth. Her protective mechanism had become her prison.

The tricky part is that these mental filters feel like wisdom. They feel like you're being smart and cautious. But what's really happening is that you're living in the past, letting old wounds dictate your present reality.

3. Fear of the Unknown Creates Mental Noise

Your mind absolutely hates uncertainty. It would rather have a terrible plan than no plan at all. When you're sitting in meditation trying to connect with your spiritual self, or when you're considering a major life change, your mind goes into overdrive for the future worries, fears, doubts and makes you stuck in endless loop of anxiety.

It starts whispering (or sometimes shouting): "What if you fail?" "What will your family think?" "You're not ready for this." "What if you're making a huge mistake?" "You don't have enough experience/money/time/credentials."

These thoughts feel urgent and important. They feel like your mind is looking out for you. But here's the truth: most of these fears are just mental shadows—dark projections that blocks your inner light.

I see this all the time with people who are called to make spiritual changes in their lives. They know deep down what they need to do, but their mind creates a symphony of "what ifs" that keeps them stuck. The mind prefers the known misery over the unknown possibility.

4. The Mind's Resistance to Surrender

Here's where it gets really interesting. In the spiritual world, surrender is power. It's about trusting the flow of life, letting go of the need to control everything, and allowing your higher self to guide you. But to your mind, surrender feels like giving up. It feels dangerous.

Your mind wants control, logic, step-by-step plans. It wants to figure everything out before taking action. But some of life's most beautiful moments—falling in love, having a creative breakthrough, experiencing profound peace—happen when we let go of mental control.

I remember my own struggle with this. For years, I tried to meditate "correctly," to have spiritual experiences that made logical sense. My mind would analyze every insight, question every intuitive hit. I was like someone trying to swim while holding onto the side of the pool—technically in the water, but not really swimming.

The breakthrough came when I realized that peace doesn't live in my thoughts. It lives in the space between thoughts, in that quiet awareness that's always there underneath the mental chatter. Your true self isn't found by thinking harder—it's found in silence and in peace.

The Beautiful Truth Your Mind Doesn't Want You to Know

Here's what your mind is desperately trying to hide from you: you are so much more than your thoughts. You are the awareness that observes the thoughts, the consciousness that exists whether your mind is busy or quiet, the eternal part of you that remains unchanged regardless of what your ego thinks about itself.

Your mind will keep creating illusions as long as you believe they're real. But the moment you start recognizing them as stories—compelling stories, but stories nonetheless—you begin to break free. You start living from your true self instead of your mental projections.

This doesn't mean your mind is the enemy. It just means you're finally putting it in its proper place: as a tool to be used, not a master to be obeyed. And that, my friend, is when real spiritual freedom begins.

How to Rise Above Illusion?

  1. Meditate in Silence – To see thoughts as clouds, not truth.

  2. Observe Without Judgement – Become the witness of your thoughts.

  3. Connect with God/Divine – Anchor your awareness beyond ego. Keep your focus on your heart instead of thoughts.

  4. Heal Inner Wounds – Through journaling, prayer, or therapy.

  5. Affirm the Truth“I am not my thoughts. I am the eternal soul.”

The mind is not your enemy—it just needs to be trained.
When you stop identifying with it, you awaken to the timeless soul within.

And then, illusions dissolve like fog before the morning sun.

I am not this illusion. I am eternal, I am whole, I am divine.

Blessings & Love to you.
